Youth Twitter

I found a poem, Last Day in Space #3 by Maureen. I like this poem because it is very descriptive and is a great poem. One quote that stood out to me was “the day to end it all.”

Patricia’s (two25.learnerblogs.org…) poem, “Love, Life, Love and Life” is a nice poem from Space 3. I think people should really read it because it talks about real things and how people feel. Here’s my response: miriamp.tumblr.com…

I wrote (elizabethr.tumblr.com…) about “Love, Life, Love and Life,” by Patricia (two25.learnerblogs.org…). I really enjoyed reading this poem it’s good. I think Patricia did a nice job writing this poem.

I am reading [an article in the NY Times](genarot.tumblr.com…) and I am learning a lot about Darfur then I knew.

THE [game](darfurisdying.com…) is hot and good. I learned that you have to run or people are going to kill you. That happens in real life too.

I played [Darfur is Dying](darfurisdying.com…). I liked it because it was fun. I learned that it’s hard to find water there.

Hey whats up in Intrepid Classroom? My class in Maryland is going to try to find time some time this week to check out your weblogs. If you want you can check mine out. How is the weather in Qatar? Are you going to participate in are blog for Darfur day?

Have you ever thought about what it would be like if everybody got along with each other? If there were no more wars so that we could all be at peace? I have.

I learned something about this because i had no idea that darfur was occurring.

I never knew about Darfur and how the Sudan militia and Janjaweed are responsible for as many as 500,000 deaths and 2,500,000 displaced refugees. I feel so sorry for them nobody deserves to be hurt like that not even Darfur so I would like to make sure that my voice is among them.

One thing that I did that makes me feel good is that I went to my judo class yesterday. This makes me feel good because I’m learning something after school and it is a great way to stay in shape.

This Thursday I’ll be meeting with 10 teachers from Brighton who are all taking part in the Powerful Learning Practice (PLP) professional development that Sheryl Nussbacum-Beach and Will Richardson are running. I think they’ll be very interested in this project. I’m very interested to see how this will develop.

Youth Twitter came up fast, so I’m figuring it out like everybody else. My students need to create an avatar/icon this week. And getting started with freewriting and Google Docs is important. So the question of how to use tumblr can wait, I think. On the other hand, I think Youth Twitter can start really fast, and be immediately interesting to many students. And IT’S EASY! The bar of entry has just been lowered about as low as it can go. The trick will be to get students who are using Youth Twitter to care about more academic blogging in Youth Voices and the Personal Learning Space. Of course, this is a good, real-world problem it seems to me.

Paul Alison started Youth Twitter at the end of January 2008. Every teacher or adult who registers is immediately made into an Administrator with the same access that Paul has. Here’s a note from his blog about how Youth Twitter started. Paul has been teaching in the New York City public schools for 25 years and he is the Technology Liaison for the New York City Writing project. I heard about a WordPress Theme that would look like Twitter on Buzz Out Loud yesterday, and they weren’t sure of all of the applications. Duh! I’ve been only experimenting very lightly with Twitter in my classroom, because I’ve been worried about not having administrative control over the students’ posts and because of security concerns with other connections they might make. This WordPress theme, “Prologue” looks like a really exciting solution! And it has tags which create categories and separate RSS feeds for everything. Wow! Imagine what we could do with this in our classrooms!

A creepy tree house is:
